Is that new footage of the Sherlock special being filmed?

Mark Gatiss is exploring his family history this week on BBC1's Who Do You Think You Are? And in the background, Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch are filming the much-anticipated Sherlock special!

Mark Gatiss is delving into the depths of his Irish family history this week on Who Do You Think You Are? It’s interesting stuff, bound to captivate fans of the Sherlock co-creator and Doctor Who writer. But there’s more to interest Sherlockians than you might have thought…

Because while Gatiss is talking about his parents and his hopes for his hunt into his heritage, the much-anticipated Sherlock special is just casually being filmed in the background.

That’s right, there is Victorian London, there are cast running up cobbled streets, there are shots being fired. You can see Benedict Cumberbatch chatting with Gatiss and his co-creator Steven Moffatt.

Sure, this clip just offers a glimpse into the episode – and try as we might we can’t glean much from it – but it’s still exciting.

With such colossal gaps between episodes we’re pleased to get our hand on any Sherlock snippet, however small…

Mark Gatiss’ Who Do You Think You Are? is on Thursday at 9:00pm on BBC1
