The smash-hit podcast Serial, which has been downloaded over 77.6 million times, is being made into a TV series by the director duo behind The Lego Movie.
Launched in In October 2014, the 12-part true-crime podcast gripped audiences across the globe, topping the iTunes charts and earning a Peabody Award for journalism. Season one of the hugely popular series investigated the case of Adnan Syed, who was convicted in 2000 of murdering his ex-girlfriend Hai Min Lee and sentenced to life imprisonment.
According to Deadline, The Lego Movie’s Christopher Miller and Phil Lord, who are huge fans of Serial, are working on a TV series that will follow the making of the podcast as it investigates a case — but it won’t be that of Syed and Lee.
Sarah Koenig and Julie Snyder, who co-produced and narrated the podcast, will executive produce the TV series alongside Lord and Miller. The combination of the creative minds behind The Lego Movie and Koenig and Snyder’s compelling journalism could mean that everything is, well, awesome…
And there’s even more to look forward to. Along with Serial’s leap to the small-screen, there will also be a second and third series of the podcast, looking into two more intriguing cases worthy of fresh investigation.
