Young love burns alongside the Home Fires

The Second World War may cast a long shadow but that doesn't mean love can't blossom on the home front

Love can blossom even in the darkest of times and that’s one thing Homes Fires youngsters Spencer (Mike Noble) and Claire (Daisy Badger) are about to discover.

Expert flirt Spencer is the local postman in the new ITV wartime drama, and he’s utterly floored when he meets Joyce’s housemaid, Claire. She’s an active member of the WI, having found herself thrust into the working world following the death of her last remaining relative.

In this exclusive clip from the new drama the pair grow closer as Spencer goes out of his way to fix Claire’s bike, but will it be enough to win her affections?

Samantha Bond and Francesca Annis lead the cast of the new six-part drama, which is based on Jambusters: The Story of the Women’s Institute in the Second World War by Julie Summers.

With their husbands, fathers, sons and brothers experiencing bloodshed on the battlefields, the women of a small rural Cheshire community have quite the task ahead of them if they are to keep their world from falling apart. That’s when the power of the Great Paxford Women’s Institute comes into play.

Created and written by The Eichmann Show scribe Simon Block, the series boasts an impressive ensemble cast including Ruth Gemmell (Utopia), Mark Bonnar (Line of Duty), Claire Rushbrook (Collision), Mark Bazeley (The Suspicions of Mr Whicher), Frances Grey (The Widower) and Ed Stoppard (Cilla).

Home Fires airs on ITV1 on Sunday 3rd May at 9pm
