The Tunnel to return to Sky in 2016

Sky Atlantic's adaptation of Scandinavian drama The Bridge will return for a second series with an original story

Sky Atlantic drama The Tunnel is set to return for a second series next year.

The crime thriller began as an adaptation of acclaimed Scandinavian drama The Bridge, but will feature an original story for its next run, called Debris.

British detective Karl Roebuck (played by Stephen Dillane) will reunite with his French counterpart Elise Wasserman (Clémence Poésy) to investigate a mysterious plane crash in the English Channel.

In doing so, the producers have chosen not to follow in the tracks of the Danish-Swedish original, which began with an investigation into an apparent eco-terrorism attack.

Lead writer Ben Richards also returns to the eight-part series, with an expected air date of early 2016.

Stephen Dillane won best actor in the International Emmys for his role as the Brit detective.
