Bob Odenkirk: Better Call Saul could continue story after the events of Breaking Bad

Actor teases the prequel series might also move forward into the future

Better Call Saul is set six years before Breaking Bad, back when the sleazy lawyer was called James McGill. It’s a lighter show, and Bob Odenkirk is even more hilarious as the ambulance chaser.

But really, when you think about it, it’s even bleaker than a cancer-riddled Chemistry teacher going off the rails. Walter White always had the chance at redemption, but we already know Saul’s life ends up ruined. Right?

“Well, we don’t know that,” Odenkirk told in an interview today, “because what if we go further into the future on this show?”

The premiere opened on a flash-forward to Saul’s post-Breaking Bad life. He has a moustache and works in a Cinnabon. Is Odenkirk teasing that this wasn’t a one-off glimpse, and they’ll be carrying the story forward? Could the prequel also serve as a sequel?

“I hope so. Yeah. I mean… there’s no rule that we have to end this show where you saw it at the start. We could go further on into the future, I think.”

So maybe Saul will get his happy ending after all, albeit with Odenkirk in a bald cap.

“Well I don’t need a bald cap. Just don’t put the powder in.”
