When it was revealed he was the recipient of this year’s Special Recognition prize at the National Television Awards, David Tennant looked genuinely shocked. The 43-year-old actor – best known for his roles in Broadchurch and Doctor Who – was treated to a video packed full of his greatest hits, accompanied by tributes from the likes of Richard Wilson, Russell T Davies, his Broadchurch co-star Olivia Colman and his Doctor Who companions Billie Piper and Catherine Tate.
Now, we know what you’re thinking. Surely he knew? Were his wife, his co-stars, his friends really capable of keeping that secret? Tennant himself looked genuinely shocked when he learned of his award, and when we stole a few moments with the man himself backstage, he was almost lost for words.
“It was like sensory overload, I couldn’t take it in,” he told us. “It was so lovely to see Billie up on the screen. I’m being really incoherent, I’m sorry. It was all a bit much.”
