Olivia Colman knew the Broadchurch killer all along… but David Tennant was kept in the dark

Colman even placed bets on who Danny Latimer's murderer was - so her co-star's suspicions weren't aroused

David Tennant has a bone to pick with Olivia Colman. While filming series one of the pair’s hit ITV drama Broadchurch, the actors – who play DI Alec Hardy and DS Ellie Miller – speculated furiously about who was behind Danny Latimer’s murder. They even placed bets.

So imagine the former Doctor Who actor’s consternation when he discovered his co-star was privy to the culprit’s identity all along…

“I knew,” reveals Colman on tonight’s Graham Norton Show. “I asked at my first audition and they told me and then they called me an hour later and said, ‘We’re not going to do it that way, nobody is going to know so you’re not allowed to know.’ So I kept the secret.”

She had us fooled, too. So, what was Tennant’s reaction when it finally came out that Colman wasn’t in the dark?

He recalls: “About halfway through series one I was talking to my agent about something and she said, ‘So no one knows?’ And I said, ‘No, absolutely nobody knows’. And she said, ‘So, it’s just Olivia that knows?’ I was like, ‘Olivia doesn’t know, we’ve spent weeks together, we’ve discussed who it might be and we’ve taken bets on who the killer is.’ She kept that secret brilliantly for months.”

“He was so angry when he found out I knew!” Colman adds.

It just goes to show, Tennant. You don’t ask, you don’t get… Speaking of which, Norton jumped on his opportunity to pose the question we’ve all been wanting to ask them: will there be a third series of Broadchurch? And will it involve Miler and Hardy finally acting on all that rippling sexual tension?

“You think? I haven’t seen that,” dismisses Colman, backed up by her co-star: “I don’t think that is obvious.”

Doth the pair protest too much? After all, it wouldn’t be the first time they’ve fibbed to us, would it?

The Graham Norton Show is on tonight at 10:35pm on BBC1. Broadchurch continues on Mondays at 9pm on ITV.
