Friends star David Schwimmer is becoming a Kardashian

The actor will play O.J. Simpson's attorney in a new series from Glee creator Ryan Murphy tackling the former NFL star's infamous trial

We don’t see much of David Schwimmer in front of the camera these days. The Friends star has kept a relatively low profile since his time playing Ross Gellar in the hit US comedy – but the opportunity to play a Kardashian was clearly one he couldn’t pass up.

So, who will he be Keeping Up with? Kim, Kourtney, Kylie, Kendall or Kris?

Er, none of the above. Instead, Schwimmer’s new role will eschew the laughs for some serious drama in The People vs. O.J. Simpson.

Schwimmer will portray attorney Robert Kardashian – the late patriarch of the reality TV family – who successfully defended the American football player during his infamous 1995 murder trial.

The story of the former NFL player’s case, told from the perspective of his lawyers, will be the subject of the first season of US network FX’s new true-crime anthology series American Crime Story. Cuba Gooding Jr. is already signed up to play Simpson, with Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story) portraying prosecutor Marcia Clark.

Directed by Glee creator Murphy and based on the book The Run of His Life: The People v O.J. Simpson by Jeffrey Toobin, the mini series “explores the chaotic behind-the-scenes dealings and manoeuvering on both sides of the court, and how a combination of prosecution overconfidence, defence shrewdness and the LAPD’s history with the city’s African-American community gave a jury what it needed: reasonable doubt.”
