ITV has announced that police drama Lewis – the Inspector Morse spin-off starring Kevin Whately and Laurence Fox – will return for a new series on Friday 10 October at 9pm.
Series eight will see Robbie Lewis drafted back into the police force to help a newly promoted Inspector Hathaway.
Back in 2013, Whately told RadioTimes.com that he’d “quite like to finish” the series, adding: “It’s a huge success and I’m hugely grateful for it. I have nothing but good memories. I love the character and the show, but it might be time that we stopped.”
But the 63-year-old will now be back for six new episodes, which will also see Clare Holman returning as pathologist Laura Hobson and Rebecca Front also on board as Chief Superintendent Jean Innocent.
When the new series was announced back in February, Steve November, ITV Director of Drama said: “Viewers have a great deal of respect for Inspector Lewis and a huge loyalty to Kevin Whately. Together with Laurence, he has forged a formidable partnership and we’re delighted to have them back on ITV.”
Executive producer Michele Buck added: “Lewis has a special place in the hearts of the ITV audience. Each story is intriguing and complex and viewers relish the fine writing, acting and excellent production values.”
The last series of Lewis – which aired at the start of 2013 – hit an audience high of 8.21m during its six-episode run.
