Sarah Lancashire drama Happy Valley to return for a second series on BBC1

Lancashire is poised to reprise her role as beleaguered police sergeant Catherine Cawood next year

Acclaimed Sarah Lancashire crime drama Happy Valley is returning for a second series.

Written by Sally Wainwright, the six-part show ended in June with a gripping finale having drawn an average weekly consolidated audience of nearly 8 million viewers per episode.

Lancashire played police sergeant Catherine Cawood who investigates former prisoner Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton), whom she believes is responsible for the death of her daughter.

The new series will go into production in 2015, to be broadcast later in the year, with Wainwright outlining some of her ideas in this exclusive interview.

BBC1 controller Charlotte Moore, who ordered the new series in conjunction with BBC drama boss Ben Stephenson, said: “Sally Wainwright’s sensational series gripped the nation. Visceral, emotional and provocative from beginning to end, it’s been fantastic to see our audience on tenterhooks, begging for more.”
