Breaking Bad spin-off Better Call Saul to be set in Albuquerque

Bob Odenkirk is reprising his role as the crooked lawyer in a prequel to the hit meth-dealing series

Better Call Saul will follow the corrupt lawyer from Breaking Bad before he meets Walter White, and the show will be filmed in a familiar place – in and around Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Jonathan Banks will return as personal investigator and hitman Mike Ehrmantraut, who worked for drug kingpin Gus Fring and Saul Goodman. There are also rumours that Aaron Paul, who plays Jesse Pinkman, and Skyler White actress Anna Gunn have shown interest in the show, although their parts have not been confirmed.

This is Spinal Tap’s Michael McKean will also star in the series, playing a lawyer called Dr. Thurber, with a bizarre condition. Meanwhile, lesser-known actors Patrick Fabian (Veronica Mars), Rhea Seehorn (Franklin & Bash) and Michael Mando (Orphan Black) have been connected to the series, it’s believed that Fabian and Seehorn will play lawyers and Mando will take the role of a criminal.

Breaking Bad series writer Vince Gilligan will head up Better Call Saul in New Mexico with much of the drama shot at the Albuquerque Studios.

“Is this going to be Frasier or After MASH? I don’t know yet,” said writer Gilligan at a press event. “If it’s ‘After MASH’ rather than Frasier, it won’t be for a lack of hard work.”

Better Call Saul is rumoured to begin in late 2014, while AMC is due to announce the official date.
