Fawlty Towers is 40 today – Radio Times celebrates with rare photos from the archive

Widely hailed as the best TV sitcom of all time, Fawlty Towers debuted on BBC2 on Friday 19 September 1975 – 40 years ago today. To mark the occasion, Radio Times has dug deep into the archive and unearthed 50 photographs, many of which have never been published before.


RT’s stalwart photographer Don Smith was on set at BBC Television Centre for five of the six episodes in the first series, only missing episode four. “I remember thinking right from the start that Fawlty Towers was an extremely good and unique show,” he says. Don captured many memorable moments from the series but, back in the day, RT could only publish a handful of his images. Luckily, many survive in our archive and can now be published for the first time…
