Episode 3: Endless Night

Summary

Newlyweds Mike and Ellie decide to build their dream home at a beauty spot called Gypsy's Acre, ignoring the warnings of elusive romany Mrs Lee about an ancient curse supposedly cast upon the land. The couple settle into their new life, but the mysterious woman makes her presence felt, subjecting them to a campaign of hatred in an attempt to force them out. Tragedy soon strikes, but as luck would have it Miss Marple is staying nearby with her recently widowed old friend Mrs Phillpot. However, if the spinster sleuth is to solve the puzzle, she must put her own life in grave danger. Murder mystery, starring Julia McKenzie, with Wendy Craig, Glynis Barber, Hugh Dennis, Tamzin Outhwaite, Tom Hughes, Joanna Vanderham, Aneurin Barnard, William Hope and Janet Henfrey.

Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A slight departure for Agatha Christie in that Endless Night didn’t feature Miss Marple at all but was told through the eyes of Michael Rogers  – played by Tom Hughes here, a charming but penniless young man who falls for Ellie, an American heiress (The Paradise’s Joanna Vanderham).

A pair of dreamers, they build a fabulous new house on Gypsy’s Acre, a piece of land that’s allegedly cursed. Inevitably there is a suspicious death. Luckily for us, in this version Jane Marple is visiting a friend nearby so can stick her nose into the affair. There’s a terrific cast list including – and Borgen fans will be thrilled about this – Birgitte Hjort Sorensen as Ellie’s glamorous German companion. But it’s Michael and Ellie’s Le Corbusier-style house with its über-stylish interior that steals the show. I don't know how can anyone concentrate on picking up clues when there are such fabulous floor lamps to look at.
