Episode 10: A Test Before Trying

Summary

Springfield Elementary is threatened with closure over poor test scores, until it is revealed that one student missed the exam and could potentially save the school with an above-average mark. Unfortunately, that pupil turns out to be Bart - can he pull it out of the bag?

Review

Standardised testing — a hot talking point in America — arrives in Springfield, forcing the kids to take multiple-choice exams. Their scores show that this is the worst school in the state, until it emerges that one boy was absent and if he takes the test and passes, the school won’t be torn down after all. Have a guess which boy.

So there’s a return to an old theme as Bart’s utter refusal to learn rears up (“I can’t make up for ten years’ goofing off in one day! I need two days!”). It’s a pleasing but not classic episode, with not many heavyweight zingers and a dud subplot in which Homer steals a parking meter.
