Episode 1: And No Birds Sing

Summary

Horticultural lecturer Rosemary Boxer is hired by a wealthy but ill businessman to help cure a disease causing his trees to lose their bark. She gets to know Laura Thyme, who turns up after a friend is killed in a suspicious car accident, and when the pair find the lord of the manor unconscious beneath his bedroom window, they must decide whether depression led him to attempt suicide or if there is a more sinister explanation. Drama, starring Felicity Kendal, Pam Ferris, David Mallinson and Roger Alborough.

Review

Surely Rosemary and Thyme is ripe for a revival? If ITV aren’t willing to recommission it, then perhaps Netflix could fund a lavish new series? Sure, maybe at the time, it was dismissed as being slightly risible – I remember a friend sneering, “What next? Cod and Chips? Lancelot and Guinevere?”, little knowing, of course, that one day we’d get Shakespeare and Hathaway. But paying the detective duo a revisit, it’s surprising how progressive the show is.

Gardeners Rosemary (Felicity Kendal) and Laura (Pam Ferris) don’t take any nonsense from any duplicitous man they come across, they’re forever schlepping heavy bags of fertiliser about without complaint, are completely independent and regularly outwit the police. Emancipation through horticulture – who’d have thought it?
