Episode 17: The Monster Isolation

Summary

Raj is upset after Lucy runs away in the middle of their date, leaving the gang to cheer him up. However, when Howard bumps into her, she admits she is incredibly shy. Meanwhile, Sheldon asks Penny to help with a new episode of Fun with Flags, and because he is impressed by her acting ability, the friends go to see her in a performance of A Streetcar Named Desire.

Review

It’s not that Raj’s chat-up lines are rusty, but maybe he should carry around a can of WD-40. And having secured a coffee-shop date with Lucy, a shy comic-book fan, Raj is stood up in humiliating fashion – she escapes via the ladies’ lavatory. “I went and looked,” he moans, “it was a high and tiny window.” Cue sympathetic “aah”s from the studio audience.

The other strand to this week’s catch-up with the spods-you-like is Sheldon’s online series “Fun with Flags”. Penny takes him to task for his stiff presentation and offers a few acting tips, all leading to a delightful pay-off. One of the show’s greatest strengths is its subtext that it’s OK to be different; that message is touchingly to the fore tonight.
