Review

How apt for a sitcom about geniuses that its guest-casting is genius, too. Bob Newhart – yes, that Bob Newhart, now 83 – pops up this week as Sheldon’s boyhood hero, Professor Proton.

Sheldon and Leonard are excited to learn that the former TV scientist is now available for children’s birthday parties, and hire him for a personal appearance. But “Proton” isn’t quite the man they were expecting.

Big Bang mines big laughs out of Sheldon’s inner child – his overexcitement is both endearing and irritating – but in deference to Newhart, the veteran deadpanner gets all the best lines. His delivery and timing are award-winningly good.
