Episode 2: Arthur's Bane: Part Two

Summary

Part two of two. Arthur and Merlin are exhausted as they make their way across the icy plains toward the fortress of Ismere, but with each tired step, the warlock's fear intensifies. What powerful secrets are Morgana and the druid Ruadan searching for among its twisted catacombs? And what dangerous game is Mordred playing? It seems not even Merlin can stop his king from walking into certain danger as the great battle for Albion begins.

Review

The family-friendly fantasy is always best when spinning umpteen plates, and tonight’s go-getter of an episode juggles its plot strands with ease. An enslaved and exhausted Arthur and Merlin are dragged across the frozen wastes of Ismere to Mogana’s new lair; Sir Gwaine is on death’s door in the catacombs beneath; a newly hardened Gwen looks serious about executing her servant Sefa; and Ruadan the druid is torn between paternal duty and loyalty to Morgana’s cause.

As Ruadan, Liam Cunningham has been another smart addition to the Merlin massive. No stranger to fantasy, he’s graced Game of Thrones and Camelot, and faced vampires, mummies and Medusa. Over five series the show’s acting roll of honour is a mighty one indeed.

It feels as though the days of pranks and playtime are over. There are do-or-die battles and stirring grace notes, some monster magic and real forward momentum in the storyline. Merlin is motoring.
