Review

Back to the beginning for the very first episode, the one and only time Dad’s Army was briefly set in the present day (or rather, 1968, when it was first shown). “Alderman” George Mainwaring is guest of honour at Walmington’s “I’m Backing Britain” campaign launch, and he addresses older versions of his former platoon members.

Then we hurtle back to the war years – to something more familiar – when a comparatively polite Mainwaring first galvanises the men of the town into a defence force (“Ah, thank you, Mr Wilson”!). It isn’t the sitcom we’re used to and yet it’s a superb scene-setter, raring to burst out of the blocks and full of rousing speeches.
