Review

Steven Van Zandt of The Sopranos returns to the Mob to play Johnny, a gangster who flees America under the FBI’s witness protection programme to take refuge in Lillehammer, Norway. It’s an unlikely port in a storm for such a thug, but Johnny has always had a soft spot for the place since the 1994 Winter Olympics. What follows is a vaguely comic fish-out-of-water drama as Johnny, complete with a Norwegian name, grapples with the complexities of a new language (there are English subtitles for the Norwegian dialogue) and settles in a small town.

You’ll have seen it all before – the first, tentative romantic steps with a good-hearted and decent local woman, a test of fortitude and character that wins over the burly beer-drinkers in the local bar, and the suspicious local police chief. None of this is much of a stretch for the hangdog Van Zandt, though he does look quite a sight in his green moon boots.
