Episode 3: Germany

Summary

The third leg of Si King and Dave Myers' biking-and-baking tour takes them to Germany, where they discover people have a passion for bread in every shape and size. The duo turn out potato bread with asparagus soup, and also rustle up bierocks - meat-filled rolls - to accompany a stein of beer, and their own version of the classic Black Forest gateau.

Review

The Hairies’ European travels take them to Germany, home of much-copied treats including pretzels, black forest gateau and speciality breads a-go-go.

You could argue that the rich, complex traditions of European baking deserve a more serious and scholarly investigation than two blokes making a wobbly-looking cake in a forest glade can deliver, but no one else is discussing traditional German potato bread on primetime telly. And who knew that Jürgen Klinsmann’s brother, Horst, runs a celebrated Stuttgart pretzel bakery? Viewers who abhor lederhosen should avoid the final four minutes.
