Episode 5: Austria

Summary

The fifth leg of Si King and Dave Myers' tour takes them to Austria, the home of Mozart, The Sound of Music and Arnold Schwarzenegger. They start off in Vienna, the patisserie capital of the world, where they are spoilt for choice by the number of different cakes on offer. Moving on, they make authentic apfelstrudel with the owner of a roadside B&B, bake Linzertorte, cook breakfast in a monastery and make a chocolate gugelhupf cake for a group of fellow bikers from Huddersfield. Being in the Alps, they also take time out from the cooking to learn how to yodel.

Review

It’s astonishing that bikers Dave Myers and Si King aren’t the size of countries, considering the cholesterol-packed baked goods they work their way through during every episode of this jolly journey.

They’re in Austria this episode, yodelling and once again wearing ill-advised lederhosen. In the Black Forest they, of course, make a yummy looking Black Forest gateau right in the midst of the Schwarzwald. Myers gets a bit carried away as he confronts a lovely, gooey sachertorte — “this isn’t food, it’s erotic” — and they meet some bikers from Huddersfield at the top of a mountain for some al fresco cooking. Or, as the Hairies put it: “We’re baking a cake we can’t pronounce in a place we can’t pronounce.”
