Episode 3: Prison of Garbage

Summary

Featuring a woman who has struggled to cope since killing her drug addict boyfriend in self-defence, and lives in an unsanitary state of chaos with her son.

Review

“I feel like I could be a better mother,” says Deborah of West Virginia as she stands in her landfill site of a kitchen where flies buzz around discarded junk-food containers and horse feed gets trampled underfoot.

Over in Florida, Mary is also beginning to recognise her limitations as a parent as her home gets filled with mountains of worthless possessions to which she attaches excessive personal value.

This being reality TV rehab, a couple of therapists are soon on the scene (one with the amazing name of Sky Kershner) to give advice and advocate change. But you can’t help but feel that it’s going to take more than a sympathetic ear and a team of fumigators to cure these women of such compulsions, especially once you’ve heard about the horrendous events that have brought them to this point.
