Episode 10: Clean Sweep

Summary

The team investigates when a cage fighter's driving licence is found next to what is assumed to be his charred remains. His wife reveals he was being stalked, but when Jo and Adam find the man who had been harassing him he swears he was not involved. A forensic examination of the corpse suggests the victim may have been another person entirely, and the arrival at the precinct of a confused man covered in blood, petrol and traces of asbestos further complicates the case.

Review

Andy Garcia and Ray Liotta are both said to have turned down the lead role in CSI: NY before Gary Sinise agreed to take it. We can only speculate as to how much more alive the series might have been with a lead character a little less hewn from oak. Mac Taylor is surely American television’s most stolid, charisma-free detective, trundling through 175-odd episodes and counting, like a semi-moveable waxwork.

But in this episode a blonde reporter attempts to melt that hardened exterior, flirting with him so keenly that even Mac begins to look intrigued. Where the love interest leads, we’ll have to wait and see.

For the time being we’re mostly concerned with the death and immolation of a cage fighter.
