Episode 2: A Fish Called Walter

Summary

A seemingly blameless librarian dies after being poisoned at a drinks reception at the museum, and Jasper is called upon to help narrow down the list of possible suspects. However not everyone on the police team is happy with the professor's involvement in the investigation. Crime drama, starring Ben Miller.

Review

I get the impression that Jasper Tempest isn’t exactly the most overworked lecturer at Cambridge. When he’s not sitting on his roof stewing about the past, he’s seeking solace in sentimental French ballads. And the likes of Google Classroom must be completely alien to him as he doesn’t even have a computer on his office desk. So, it’s no wonder he’s now also managing to find time in his diary to aid the police with their murder cases — the latest involving the seemingly random poisoning of a meek librarian at a local reception.

As mysteries go, it’s satisfyingly plotted and plays fair with viewers, but the main appeal of this series is the touching, fledgeling friendship that’s forming between Tempest and his former student DS Lisa Donckers. Each obviously holds the other in high regard, but words of praise aren’t coming easily to the professor’s lips.

Review

Jasper Tempest is cut from the same starched cloth as DI Richard Poole, the character Ben Miller played in Death in Paradise. Both are uptight and never seen in anything other than a suit, though Tempest is even more rigid, choosing to hand-sanitise the surgical gloves he wears while teaching criminology at Cambridge.

He’s also a genius detective, which is why he’s brought in by CID to advise following a rape at the university. A promising crime drama set-up, then, but the issue here, as in the original Belgian version of Professor T, is with tone: one minute female undergraduates are being chased like they’re in a 1980s slasher movie, the next we have Tempest indulging in surreal flights of fancy as he imagines his students to be a brood of chickens.

The grit and whimsy are a peculiar mix and – like the Prof and the police – not yet entirely comfortable in each other’s company.
