Episode 3: Tiger Tiger

Summary

Jasper becomes embroiled in a hostage situation, but his unconventional negotiating tactics do not go down well with the police, while old flame Christina reveals all is not well with her marriage. Crime drama, starring Ben Miller.

Review

The way things are set up at the police station on Professor T is baffling. Hardly anyone seems to work there, it’s so ill-lit that it feels as though a red electricity bill has been ignored, and the decor doesn’t appear to have been updated since the 1970s. Now, as Jasper gets involved in a hostage negotiation involving a jeweller, we get the added weirdness of a Dusty Springfield song being played in the squad room for reasons that are hard to fathom.

Granted, the mystery upon which we’re supposed to be focused isn’t half bad and features a couple of sly surprises. But so determinedly odd is this series that it’s a struggle at times to stay properly invested.

Review

Jasper Tempest is cut from the same starched cloth as DI Richard Poole, the character Ben Miller played in Death in Paradise. Both are uptight and never seen in anything other than a suit, though Tempest is even more rigid, choosing to hand-sanitise the surgical gloves he wears while teaching criminology at Cambridge.

He’s also a genius detective, which is why he’s brought in by CID to advise following a rape at the university. A promising crime drama set-up, then, but the issue here, as in the original Belgian version of Professor T, is with tone: one minute female undergraduates are being chased like they’re in a 1980s slasher movie, the next we have Tempest indulging in surreal flights of fancy as he imagines his students to be a brood of chickens.

The grit and whimsy are a peculiar mix and – like the Prof and the police – not yet entirely comfortable in each other’s company.
