Summary

Actor, comedian and superfan Matt Lucas charts the history of the colourful little characters who found their way into the hearts and bedtime stories of generations of children around the world. It's a story that began with a `tickle' in 1971 and became a family dynasty - and one of Britain's most pioneering and enduring global brands.

“What a lot of Mr Men there are... I wonder which one we shall be meeting next. Can you guess?” Arthur Lowe’s jovial narration was familiar to a whole generation, but three years before the animated Mr Men, ad man Roger Hargreaves published his first book in the collection in 1971, hence this sweet anniversary programme.

Today there are 90 Mr and Little Miss characters and their capers have sold 250 million books worldwide. Kid-in-a-candy-store Matt Lucas gets to handle Hargreaves’s first ever self-made book, held together with sellotape, and meets his son Adam who took over the business in 1983, as well as original animator Terry Ward.

Theories as to their durability are offered: “It helps children understand that we are many things,” as a child psychologist neatly puts it. But their creator spoke of “little books for little hands”. And it must surely have helped those little hands that Bump, Happy et al were so easily drawable?
