Review

It’s series four of the poised drug drama co-created by the late John Singleton. British actor Damson Idris plays Franklin, a bright, ruthless teen in 1980s Los Angeles who realises he can get rich a lot quicker dealing a lucrative new kind of cocaine than going straight.

The riddle of the show is that Idris is so good, we can’t help rooting for Franklin even as his trade destroys lives and, sooner or later, entire communities. His supplier is rogue CIA man Teddy (a shifty Carter Hudson) and the cast is rich in big characters, sharply drawn. As we return to the fray, Franklin is recovering from his injuries and trying to stop his marketplace descending into gang warfare.
