Episode 1: Johnny Vegas: Carry on Glamping

Summary

Glamping is on the rise in Britain, and it's no longer just a posh tent in a field. Up and down the country people are repurposing old vehicles into boutique hotels - and now, there's a new kid in town. This documentary follows comedian Johnny Vegas and his assistant Bev see through their plans to create the county's coolest glamping site. Johnny is starting by buying a vintage bus he has seen online, hoping to renovate it and put it in a field as part of his new project. The only problem is, the vehicle is in Malta, so he will need a plane to collect it.

Review

Johnny Vegas has a dream, to open a bespoke glamping site for five reconditioned, chic old (static) buses for hire. But as his long-suffering, even heroic assistant Bev attests, his attention is prone to wandering and she fears she’ll be left to clean up the mess.

“I promise not to involve your mobile number in any of this,” Vegas swears as he doodles his ideas on a piece of paper. Bev isn’t the only one who is sceptical. Vegas meets his family and friends at the pub and they aren’t exactly supportive. “It feels like an intervention,” says Vegas, glumly.

Meanwhile, his dear mum Patricia (who has since died) couldn’t get her head around her son’s career: “I don’t want you to do any more stand up, it’s filthy. I want you to act.”

Just like Vegas, this is a random, shambolic, strangely endearing look at one man’s obsession.
