Review

Personable engineer Rob Bell, of Walking Britain’s Lost Railways, looks at the Second World War and the abandoned buildings that formed part of Britain’s sea defences. With contributions from historians, Bell explores the south coast, which is littered with concrete structures that were once gun batteries and pillboxes built to help fight a Nazi invasion.

There’s a poignant glimpse at what life was like for the soldiers packed into pillboxes, guns trained at an unseen enemy, as they kept long, dangerous vigils. There would be no withdrawal, they’d have to fight to the last man and to the last round.
