Review

The chemistry between Kate Winslet and Guy Pearce as Mare and Richard is so natural, I’d be quite happy if Mare of Easttown just became a middle-aged romantic dramedy about the two of them. Instead, however, it is a load of other things all at once: murder mystery, family saga, gritty smalltown slice-of-life, bereavement story and addiction drama.

The only way it can blend all that without becoming a mess is by sure-footed writing, but there’s a catch: when Mare is off screen and we’re focusing on other relationships, no matter how interesting and well-drawn they are, we want Winslet back. That’s what star power does. This week, Mare adjusts to her suspension – or rather, doesn’t.
