Episode 1: Miss Lady Hawk Herself

Summary

A detective in a small Pennsylvania town investigates a local murder while trying to keep her life from falling apart. Crime drama, starring Kate Winslet.

Review

Kate Winslet has a bruised, weary look that barely leaves her face in this carefully drawn HBO drama. She plays (brilliantly, of course) Mare Sheehan, a blunt police detective in a cold Pennsylvania town. It’s the kind of close-knit place where she knows everyone and everyone knows her, yet she still seems to hate it.

Her view is summed up nicely when she meets a washed-up writer in a bar (played by Guy Pearce) who explains he has recently moved to the area. “I’m sorry, that’s too bad,” Mare jokes, and when he says the place seems OK, she adds, “Give it time.”

That’s her thing, she is dry and disillusioned. And as the first episode unfolds, there is a great sense of her damaged life and the history of the down-at-heel town, the frayed edges of a community where an old case still haunts Mare — and a new one is about to tax her further.
