Episode 1: The Repair Shop

Summary

New series. A Gloucestershire woman brings in her King Charles II painting, hoping Lucia Scalisi can restore it to its crowning glory, and silversmith Brenton West works on a well-travelled trunk, which holds cherished memories for a mother and daughter. Goldsmith Richard Talman tries to reunite the broken pieces of an engagement ring and toy restorers Julie and Amanda revive a toy donkey that comforted a young child after he lost his mother and his sister.

Review

Among the treasures being restored today is an oil painting of King Charles II that frankly looks a bit dull until Lucia Scalisi gently works her magic with a cotton bud; a studded wooden chest from Oman that takes days of intricate work by Brenton West and Will Kirk to bring it back to life; and an old cuddly toy, known as Donkey, that’s a bit wonky and very scruffy until Julie Tatchell and Amanda Middleditch get to work on him.

Every restoration reveal is emotional, but the one involving an engagement ring that Richard Talman says is “in the top five of worst-condition rings I’ve repaired” really touches the heart.
