Episode 5: John Lennon: A Life in Ten Pictures

Summary

A journey through the musician's life in 10 defining photos, with their secrets revealed by those who were there, and those who knew the musician best. The pictures show Lennon's lifelong search to find his place in the world, documenting his disaffection with living the life of a Beatle and his relationship with the woman who became the love of his life, the avant-garde artist Yoko Ono.

Review

The photograph of John Lennon signing autographs, taken outside his New York home in December 1980, isn’t in itself that remarkable; its significance is that just hours later Lennon was dead.

Lennon’s life is told through this and nine other defining photos – from blurry snapshots to professional portraits. We see Lennon as a young boy with his mum, but hear how he wasn’t brought up by her because she was “a bad influence”. From the 1964 portrait we can see the art school influences (he met first wife Cynthia there), but we learn how, at the height of Beatlemania, he struggled to reconcile the life of pop star with family man. However, what’s clear from all the pictures is that he strived to live life on his own terms.
