Episode 2: Food Unwrapped

Summary

Jimmy Doherty is in Thailand asking how the blossom from a banana tree is shaking up fish and chip suppers. Matt Tebbutt visits Spain to find out how the delicate raspberry gets from fields to fridges without turning to mush, and Andi Oliver heads to an onion factory to see how the eye-watering vegetables are peeled on a gigantic scale.

Review

When you chuck a punnet of delicate raspberries into your supermarket trolley, you’re trashing all the care that’s gone into their picking, packaging and transporting so they get to you in peak condition. Matt Tebbutt hears how careless handling can make a raspberry-grower cry. Also bringing tears to Andi Oliver’s eyes is the highly mechanised peeling room in the onion factory she visits.
And if you’ve noticed cans of banana blossom on your supermarket shelves (I can’t say I have but it’s popular with vegans), Jimmy Doherty goes to Thailand to investigate this nutritious foodstuff. And then on to a British chippy to see whether it works as a fish substitute.
