Episode 5: Meet the Richardsons

Summary

Jon tries to sell the house to Kevin McCloud, and while Lucy and her Mum Gill return to Hull to make a documentary about aliens for Brian Cox, Russell Howard reveals all about Jon's drug use.

Review

Jon Richardson isn’t listed as a writer, but this scattershot mockumentary often feels like one of his stand-up routines has been broken up and semi-dramatised. That’s no bad thing, of course – he’s great value, whether sounding off about yoga, defending his love of Nectar points or explaining why he watches Grand Designs (“I love other people’s misery”).

There are good guest stars as well: Kevin McCloud drops by in Hebden Bridge and proves an unreliable ally, while Danny Baker is interviewed for Jon’s labour-of-love doc about singer Jake Thackray. As always, the niggly sofa conversations with Lucy are very funny: was her upbringing more working class than Jon’s… or just weird?
