Episode 6: Escape to the Farm with Kate Humble

Summary

Kate joins her friend and neighbour Rob Penn in his quest to plant a million trees on the hillsides of the Brecon Beacons, and takes a trip into the pine woods with forager Liz Knight. Back at the farm, Kate is up at the crack of dawn to help milk a neighbour's flock of goats, procuring rich pickings for the local creamery in Abergavenny, where they make a delicious soft goat's cheese.

Review

Kate Humble’s ebullience deserts her one foggy morning in Monmouthshire as she watches the cutting down of one of her mighty ash trees. It’s badly infected by ash dieback and the tree surgeon worries that it could be a hazard. All the good reasons in the world can’t cheer Humble, particularly when she sees that the tree is in bud.

But that’s life in the country, she can’t be sad for long. Humble visits a friend near the Brecon Beacons who’s at the vanguard of a huge tree-planting project, then visits a creamery near Abergavenny that produces goats’ milk and cheese. Of course, she has a go and later makes a goat-y feast in her kitchen.
