Episode 1: Demon Girl

Summary

Spoof documentary from the creators of What We Do in the Shadows, about New Zealand cops investigating the supernatural. O'Leary and Minogue arrest a projectile vomiting teenager, assuming it is just a case of binge drinking, only to discover she is possessed by a demon.

Review

Fans of What We Do in the Shadows will enjoy this deadpan sort-of-spin-off, co-written by Jemaine Clement. It’s a New Zealand-based parody of programmes about the police, except here it’s dim-witted cops who keep stumbling on paranormal phenomena without a clue how to proceed, like a low-wattage Mulder and Scully.

A teenage girl they arrest has demonic eyes and spews out green bile, croaking that the dead shall rise from hell, but Officer O’Leary (Karen O’Leary) puts it all down to drugs, while the girl’s mother wonders if it’s “too much screen time”. When a hellmouth opens in the mall, they consult YouTube about how to perform an exorcism.
