Review

The team behind the excellent Once upon a Time in Iraq tell the story of the global pandemic with a similar kind of collage approach, the bigger picture assembled from sharply drawn individual stories. Interviewees are filmed against a simple black background and there’s evocative footage from across the world, while dissonant music adds a sense of doom.

We hear from a Leamington Spa doctor shocked by the impact of Covid; a woman in Iceland describes how she couldn’t visit her sick mother in a nursing home to say goodbye; a food blogger in Wuhan is glad when she can go to McDonald’s again; a man in Colombia describes the spirit of solidarity that emerged in Bogotá. It’s effective and stirring, with a simple message that, as Vladimir in Bogota says, “As a society, our priority is to take care of one another.”
