Episode 1: Saved and Remade

Summary

New series. Sabrina Grant hosts as people bring in loved-but-unused treasures to be transformed into contemporary and useful items by a team of expert crafters. Jane brings in her late mother's wedding dress and pink suede jacket, with metalcraft expert Leigh and seamstress Elizabeth pitching radical designs to her.

Review

When you have a hit as big as The Repair Shop, it generates what you might call tribute acts. The restorers on this new show don’t simply repair things, they take objects that are “not good enough to use but too precious to lose”, and reimagine them entirely. So in the first episode a battered 1940s tea trolley is transformed into a coatstand, with the wheels as hooks.

It’s a masterclass in upcycling: an old propeller is put on a microwave motor inside a cake tin to become a groovy table. And amid much metalwork and talk of “penetrative welds”, some dresses with great sentimental value are incorporated into a wall-mounted sculpture that the owner describes politely as “eye-catching”.
