Episode 10: Wales Starter

Summary

The first of the Wales heats sees Hywel Griffith, Chris Cleghorn, Nathan Davies and Ali Borer prepare their starters, with one chef leaving at the end of the programme. Which one that is will be decided by the veteran judge of this week's competition, a previous winner who remains a surprise to the contenders until the moment they walk into the kitchen to taste the first course.

Review

“Which veteran judge would scare you most?” Andi Oliver asks the four Welsh chefs in this heat. They agree that Daniel Clifford frightens all of them. “That would send me back out the door,” laughs Ali Borer. It turns out it’s not him, so thankfully Ali stays in the kitchen.

Wales has produced many scientists and inventors so there’s plenty of inspiration for the canapés, starters and fish dishes they’re creating for the banquet. Hywel Griffith makes the most visually spectacular starter – turning what he describes as a blue cheese salad into the Great Nebula of Andromeda.

Nathan Davies’s “nuts about trees” dish also gets a stunned “wow” when he plates it up.
