Episode 8: The End of History

Summary

Martin is tortured by Valdez after being taken hosage, while Brigitte teams up with Schweppenstette and faces off with Lenora. Elsewhere, Tina and Ingrid uncover Tischbier's deepest secret. Drama, starring Jonas Nay. In German. Last in the series.

Review

The whole incredible three-series Deutschland saga ends tonight – for those who haven’t already hoovered it up on demand – and it’s quite a finale. The fact that this show tends to follow dream logic rather than any kind of standard plotting means last week we were left in the dark. Did Martin kill Lenora? Did someone else shoot him? How many assassins’ rifles pointed at each other can one episode hold?

As we rejoin the clammy nightmare that Martin’s life has become, he is hanging in chains from the ceiling of a CIA black site, with Hector – the CIA guy who looks more like the leader of an indie band – accusing him of having been involved in the attempt to kill Helmut Kohl, among other things. From there a disturbing, stark and moving coda puts the full stop on an extraordinary piece of television.
