Episode 1: The Darkest Hour - Part One

Summary

Evil sorceress Morgana summons mighty gatekeeper the Cailleach, who opens a door to another world from which hellish creatures emerge. As Arthur and his loyal knights take up arms, Merlin discovers the only thing that will stop them is an unimaginable sacrifice. Colin Morgan returns as the young wizard in the first of a two-part story, guest starring Gemma Jones (the Harry Potter movies) and Emilia Fox (Silent Witness).

Review

“In a land of myth and a time of magic…” Yes, the rumbling tones of John Hurt mark the return of BBC1’s rollicking, old-school fantasy. As series four opens, a cowled figure drags a cart across a rocky landscape. It’s villain-in-chief Morgana and she transports an injured passenger towards a place of sacrifice. Before you can utter a guttural spell in Old English, she has summoned the gatekeeper to the spirit world (Gemma Jones) and unleashed all manner of howling banshees upon the world.

So what else is new in Arthurworld, one year on? Well, Uther is a broken man after Morgana’s betrayal, and Uncle Agravaine waits ominously in the wings. Otherwise Merlin continues to banter sitcomishly with his liege, and Gaius (Richard Wilson) still knows everything about everything.

This first of a two-part story is a little sluggish, but there are decent, ghoulish scares, and it’s good to have the show back.
