Episode 1: Jamie: Keep Cooking Family Favourites

Summary

Jamie Oliver returns to demonstrate more recipes for simple, affordable and delicious meals, from quick and tasty dinners to useful staples to add to regular repertoires. He begins reinventing the roast chicken by combining it with the margherita pizza, and takes inspiration from one of his family's favourite takeaway dishes to create a prawn-toast toastie served with sweet chilli sauce and a quick cucumber pickle.

Review

There’s a sunny, summery feeling to Jamie’s new series that doesn’t go amiss at a time when some of us have still got snow on the ground. It does feel a little weird at this point to be watching him in a short-sleeved shirt, picking salad with his kids or talking about the smell of a greenhouse full of tomatoes. It’s like he’s reporting from another world.

But seasonal be damned, we can still source all the ingredients for tonight’s dishes, which include a radical approach to roast potatoes. Get ready for giant tray-baked smoked-mozzarella-stuffed gnocchi. Not your standard accompaniment to roast chicken but they do look good.

Even cleverer is the second dish, which adapts those prawn toasts you get in a Chinese takeaway into a sort of French toastie that is dipped in egg-white and sesame seeds, then fried. You’ll want one.
