Episode 1: Striker

Summary

New series. It's the start of 1971 - though wearied from the events of the past year, there's no chance of 'light duties' at the CID. Crestfallen and rarely without a scotch in hand, Endeavour finds himself right back in the thick of it when an explosive murder at an Oxford college has potentially far-reaching political ramifications. Meanwhile, the IRA have made a threat against the life of the Oxford Wanderers' star striker, and Endeavour is tasked with the duty of acting bodyguard.

Review

We have a TV takeover tonight by actor Shaun Evans, who’s back with this eighth series of the consistently classy Endeavour, while also remaining submerged and on the suspect list in Vigil (9.00pm BBC1).

As for DS Morse, he too is out of his depth in this 1971-set opener, having been assigned to protect a high-profile local footballer who’s received a death threat from the IRA. As you’ll no doubt have been able to predict, the detective knows much more about opera sopranos than he does star strikers and so must quickly get to grips with this alien world of lucrative sponsorship deals and grasping agents in sheepskin jackets.

But there also appear to be links to a bombing at the more rarefied Lonsdale College, where Endeavour was once an undergraduate. Before a solution emerges at the two-hour mark, expect plenty of scotch-drinking, some neat twists from writer Russell Lewis and for television’s most famous big red book to have made an appearance.
