Episode 1: Snackmasters: Quavers

Summary

Fred Sirieix returns with the show in which leading chefs try to crack the secret techniques and recipes behind some of Britain's best-loved snacks. To begin, they are tasked with replicating a lunchbox legend - a packet of Quavers. However, it quickly becomes clear that these cheesy snacks are easy to take for granted, as Anna Haugh, who learned her trade from the likes of Gordon Ramsay, and technical chef Aktar Islam discover. Which one of them will get closest to the original look and taste of the classic, curly crisps?

Review

This is the show where Fred Sirieix sets a lowbrow challenge for top chefs: can they create convincing replicas of everyday snack foods? Is all their Michelin-starred kitchen kit and molecular gastronomy knowhow the equal of something you can buy for 50p at a corner shop?

It’s a great idea, not least because it’s fun to see people with huge talent obsess over achieving just the right texture of a KitKat wafer, or the exact pickled onion flavour you get in Monster Munch.

As series two opens, the challenge for chefs Anna Haugh and Aktar Islam is to re-create a packet of Quavers, without ending up with something like those squiggles of polystyrene packing material you get with a new TV.
