Episode 2: Stripes vs Spots

Summary

Jonathan discovers the secretive den site of Dada the lioness' newborn cubs. Meanwhile, Olare the leopard displays a rarely seen mating ritual.

Review

One for cheetah fans this week. There’s a group of five male cheetahs who prowl around the Kenyan savannah like the most elegant bullies ever. Watching one go after a young zebra is powerful, brutal TV. That’s balanced by lots of heart-warming footage of lionesses lazing around with their creche of cubs, head-rubbing, nuzzling, pawing, stretching and yawning.

At one point we glimpse a pair of scrappy little “palm of your hand” lion cubs that can’t even walk yet. It’s the kind of thing this series does well – just tosses out great sequences as if we’d stumbled on them. There’s also some heavy-handed leopard flirting: if in doubt, hit your prospective mate in the face with your backside.
