Review

With America’s next chapter being decided on Tuesday, Channel 5 has cannily scheduled this Story so Far, taking in the Pilgrim Fathers, the gold rush, civil war and the abolition of slavery. What emerges is a tale filled with contradictions, as we witness how this “land of the free” has had its history blotted with racial inequality and oppression. This is also a nation with more millionaires than anywhere else on Earth, yet one where millions still live in poverty.
Also up for analysis is the enshrinement in law of the right to bear arms – something that, as we’ve seen most recently in the debate surrounding the nomination of Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, continues to divide the country.
