Review

There was no “honour” in what happened to 20-year-old Iraqi Kurd Banaz Mahmod: a young woman, a British citizen, who fled a violent arranged marriage and found love with a man of her choosing.

Banaz’s fate in 2006 was a grotesque distortion of the very word “honour” and what it means, and is revealed in harrowing detail in Gwyneth Hughes’s fine drama - first shown in September 2020 - based on this true story.

Keeley Hawes is quietly brilliant as Detective Chief Inspector Caroline Goode, who is appalled to discover after Banaz is reported missing by her boyfriend that the young woman has approached police five times for help, claiming her family is going to kill her. But she was given no help.

As an investigation begins, the Kurdish community in south London closes ranks and as her fears for Banaz grow, Goode learns just how far some men will go to protect the so-called honour of their family.
