Episode 2: The Savoy

Summary

Staff at the London hotel prepare for Valentine's Day, one of the busiest and most profitable nights of the year. Restaurant Director Thierry is still reeling from owner Gordon Ramsay's visit to the Grill, but he gets to work re-training his front-of-house staff and looking at how he can improve his already high standards. Downstairs in the florists, boss Belinda and junior florist MaryKate prepare £20,000 worth of flowers, which will be decorated across the hotel throughout the week.

Review

Some top hotels can have a hint of snootiness, a dusty atmosphere that feels staid. Not the Savoy, by the looks of it, where you get the impression from this series that staff tease and flirt with guests and there’s a sort of swishy playfulness just beneath the surface – a hugely polished and primped surface, mind you.

Tonight’s visit is mainly focused on the Savoy’s efforts for Valentine’s Day earlier this year. One young man has hired a suite for the afternoon to spring a proposal on his girlfriend amid scattered rose petals and a view of the Thames – it’s a nice scene. Meanwhile, stressy butler Sean barks into his radio a lot and a visiting supermodel insists on goat’s milk.
